How Many Shots Are in a Fifth?

A fifth in a US liquor store is the 750 mL bottle. This page is the shots-in-a-bottle calculator locked to that size: pour counts at 1, 1.25, 1.5, and 2 oz, the fluid ounces in the bottle, and a side-by-side with a liter and a1.75 L handle.

Planning note: pour counts are for buying and portioning. They are not a per-person target, and the standard-drink figure is not medical or legal advice.

Fifth shot calculator

Bottle size is fixed at 750 mL. The same bottle ÷ pour function used on the shots in a bottle calculator produces the count. For 30 mL and 44 mL metric pours, use that page and choose the fifth there.

Ounces in a fifth, and the older fifth of a gallon

750 mL converts at 29.5735 mL per US fluid ounce, so a modern fifth is25.36 fl oz. A US gallon is 128 fl oz, and one fifth of that gallon is 25.6 fl oz, or about757.1 mL. The metric bottle that replaced it is7.1 mL smaller, which is0.24 fl oz — less than a quarter of a 1 oz pour. Shot tables on this page use 750 mL, not the pre-metric 757 mL fifth.

At a stated 40% ABV (a common labeled strength, not a brand), this fifth contains about 16.91 US standard drinks of 14 grams of ethanol. Change the ABV field if the bottle in front of you is labeled differently. The pour count stays the same.

Shots at 1, 1.25, 1.5, and 2 oz

Bars often pour 1.5 oz. Home recipes and some venues use 1 oz, 1.25 oz, or a 2 oz double. The remainder column is what is left after you stop on a full pour, so you do not plan 17 guests around a bottle that only yields 16 full 1.5 oz shots.

Fifth vs liter vs handle

These three bottles are the usual US spirits sizes above a pint. A liter is one third larger than a fifth. A handle is 2.33 fifths, which is why a handle is the bulk buy and a fifth is the one-bottle buy. Prices per ounce belong on thehandle page, where you can type the two shelf prices.

When a fifth is the bottle to buy

A fifth matches a single cocktail spec, a gift, or a small round where 16 or so standard pours is enough. It is a poor fit when an open bar needs dozens of pours of the same spirit: that is ahandle question, and the bottle count for the whole event belongs on the open bar calculatoror the party alcohol calculator.

FAQ

Is a fifth 750 mL or one-fifth of a gallon?

In current US retail, a fifth is the 750 mL bottle. A historical fifth of a US gallon was 25.6 fl oz, about 757 mL. This page counts the 750 mL bottle.

How many 1.5 oz shots are in a fifth?

A 750 mL fifth holds about 16.91 pours of 1.5 oz. That is 16 full pours, with a little more than an ounce left in the bottle.

Does ABV change how many shots are in a fifth?

No. Shot count is bottle volume divided by pour size. ABV changes the US standard-drink equivalent, not the number of pours.

How does a fifth compare with a handle?

A 1.75 L handle holds 1750 ÷ 750 = 2.33 fifths. Use the handle page for bulk pour counts and price per ounce.
