ABV Calculator

This calculator estimates alcohol by volume from original gravity (OG) and final gravity (FG). It supports SG, Brix, and Plato inputs plus optional hydrometer temperature correction and batch-size alcohol volume.

How these formulas work

Standard ABV: ABV = (OG - FG) × 131.25. This widely used linear equation is quick and accurate for most beer-strength fermentation ranges.

Advanced ABV: (76.08 × (OG - FG) / (1.775 - OG)) × (FG / 0.794). This version adjusts for density changes at higher gravities.

Hydrometer correction: the calculator applies the ASBC-style polynomial correction factor (same family used in major brewing calculators) based on sample and calibration temperatures.

FAQ

What is a normal FG for beer?

Many ales finish around 1.008–1.016 SG, but yeast strain, mash profile, and fermentation temperature can push it outside that range.

Should I use corrected OG and FG for ABV?

Yes. Correcting both gravity readings to your hydrometer's calibration temperature gives a cleaner ABV estimate than correcting only one side.
