How Much Honey for Mead

These tables are the mead calculator run for 1 US gallon and 5 US gallons at common target ABVs. Batch gallons mean the fermenter volume you enter on that calculator, not the volume of the honey itself. Each row links back with the same ABV, finishing gravity, and batch size filled in.

Gravity math

Potential ABV on this site uses the standard equation, solved for original gravity:

OG = FG + (target ABV ÷ 131.25)

Honey contribution uses 35 gravity points per pound per gallon:

honey pounds = ((OG − 1) × 1000 × gallons) ÷ 35

Kilograms are those pounds times 0.453592. A dry table below uses FG 1.000. Check a finished batch with measured OG and FG:ABV = (OG − FG) × 131.25.

Sweet example, still 12% ABV but FG 1.010: estimated OG is 1.101, which is 2.90 lb in 1 gallon and 14.49 lb in 5 gallons. That is more honey than the dry 12% row because the yeast has to start higher to finish with residual sugar and still show a 12.00% potential.

Assumed finishing gravity: 1.000. Honey PPG: 35.

Honey for 5 gallons

Five gallons is five times the 1 gallon honey weight when OG and PPG stay the same.

The form below is the same calculator as the mead page, starting at 1 gallon, 12% ABV, and FG 1.000 so it matches the dry table. Measured OG and FG on the right are a separate check after fermentation.

FAQ

Why 35 points per pound per gallon?

35 PPG is the practical average this site uses for honey. Real honey varies with water content, often through the low-to-mid 30s. The table matches the mead calculator so the two pages do not disagree.

What if the mead finishes sweet?

A higher finishing gravity needs a higher original gravity for the same ABV, which means more honey. The dry table assumes FG 1.000. The worked example at FG 1.010 shows the difference for a 12% target.

Is the table an exact honey weight?

It is a recipe estimate. Confirm original gravity with a hydrometer after you mix the must. If you only have a refractometer reading after fermentation, correct it before you trust the ABV.

How much honey is in the 1 gallon, 12% row?

At FG 1.000, 12% ABV in 1 gallon is about 2.61 lb (1.18 kg), from an estimated OG of 1.091.
